The Crucible
The theme of the story is vengeance. The girls from Salem had been doing rituals to summon the devil for evil. They "cursed" all of the people they didn't like. Reverend Parris came across the girls as they did their ritual and had his suspicions about whether or not it was a ritual. Afterwards, Betty Parris falls ill and Parris calls for Reverend Hale, a supernatural specialist, to check if there was witchcraft involved with her sickness. While Betty is lying in her bed and Abigail taking care of her, John walks in and Abigail begins to try and lure him into liking her again. He, feeling guilty, denies her. Reverend Hale comes into town to check on Betty and the "witches are revealed". Abigail blames Tituba and Tituba accuses Abigail of being there also. They didn't want to be hanged so they began to blame others for the sake of it. At first, it begins as a blame game; then, turns into a murder plot. Since John Proctor refused Abigail, she blamed Elizabeth (John's wife) of also being seen with the devil.
